To set up a desktop network meter in Windows, you must use a third-party application because Windows does not include a native, real-time download and upload display for your desktop wallpaper or taskbar. You can easily configure a network meter using safe, lightweight utilities from the Microsoft Store or GitHub. Here are the best methods to set one up on your computer. Method 1: Using the Microsoft Store (Easiest)
This method is perfect for a quick installation without managing zip files.
Download the App: Open the Microsoft Store and search for an app like Net Speed Meter or Internet Speed Indicator.
Launch the Widget: Once downloaded, open the app to display a small, floating bandwidth window on your screen.
Pin to Taskbar: Right-click the application icon in your system tray or on the floating widget, and select options like Keep in Taskbar or drag it directly down into place.
Adjust Themes: Right-click the widget and navigate to settings to change the background style to transparent so it blends cleanly with your Windows theme.
Method 2: Using TrafficMonitor via GitHub (Advanced & Open Source)
TrafficMonitor is a highly customizable, lightweight open-source tool preferred by advanced users.
Download: Go to GitHub and locate the repository by user zhongyang219. Download the latest TrafficMonitor_x64.zip from the Releases sidebar.
Extract: Right-click the downloaded zip file and select Extract All.
Run: Open the extracted folder, right-click TrafficMonitor.exe, and select Run as administrator. A floating network speed window will appear on your desktop.
Move to Taskbar: Right-click the floating window and select Show Taskbar Window.
Clean the Interface: Right-click the floating widget again and uncheck Show Main Window to hide the floating box, leaving only the sleek taskbar layout.
Set Auto-Start: Right-click the taskbar speed layout, go to Options, select the General tab, and check Start with Windows. Alternative: Windows Native “Resource Monitor”
If you prefer not to install third-party software, you can view a live network graph natively through Windows utilities: Press Win + S, type Resource Monitor, and hit Enter.
Click the Network tab to see real-time data transmission speeds and a visual activity graph.
